Tips for Adjusting to Wearing Fixed Braces

Any new dental appliance requires a period of adjustment and braces are no exception. These easy tips will help you get used to your new braces.

Coping with Any Discomfort

Initially, your teeth may feel a bit tender. Any discomfort can be relieved using over-the-counter medication. You may also find that your lips, cheeks and tongue feel sore for the first one or two weeks as they adjust to your braces. It can help to use orthodontic wax to cover any part of the brace irritating your mouth. Using a warm salt water rinse will help your mouth feel more comfortable.

Eating with Braces

The first few days after fitting, stick to eating softer foods that are easy to chew until your mouth feels entirely comfortable. You will need to avoid any foods that are very chewy, crunchy or sticky, as well as hard foods that could damage or break your braces. Foods that you usually bite into, such as apples or corn on the cob can still be enjoyed if you cut them into smaller pieces so you can chew them using only your back teeth.

Good oral hygiene is crucial while wearing braces but don’t worry, we will show you how to brush and floss thoroughly.
